Form Follows Function

"Form follows function" is a principle of 20th-century architecture. Coined by American architect Louis Sullivan, it asserts that the form of a building should be primarily based upon its intended function. He developed the idea while working on a new aesthetic for skyscrapers amid the late 19th-century revival of traditional classicism. Sullivan is widely misquoted—he actually said "form ever follows function"—but perhaps the greater error is that the saying is often wrongly attributed to whom? More...

Black Tuesday (1929)

In the 1920s, the US stock market expanded rapidly and reached a peak in August 1929, when prices began to decline while speculation increased. On October 24, "Black Thursday," a record 12,894,650 shares were traded. Appearing in vaudeville, musicals, dramas, movies, and radio throughout her career, Brice demonstrated that a woman could succeed in entertainment without exploiting her sexuality or making a fool of herself or other women. What Broadway musical was based on her life? More...

I Can't Come to Work Today Because...

Most employees use their sick days when they are legitimately ill, but about a third call in sick when they are actually perfectly well. Some come up with incredibly outlandish excuses to explain why they must miss a day of work, and employment website CareerBuilder.com has highlighted a few of the more bizarre ones from the past year in its annual survey of absenteeism. One worker apparently told his boss that he would have to miss work because his false teeth flew out the car window while he was driving down the highway, and another claimed her home's windows and doors had been glued shut, trapping her inside.
