Ladislaus I of Hungary

Now regarded by Hungarians as the model of chivalry and valor, Ladislaus was king of Hungary from 1077 to 1095. An able king, he expanded his country, suppressed paganism, modified the criminal code, and issued laws protecting private property. In 1091, he conquered Croatia at the invitation of his sister, Croatia's widowed queen. He supported the pope against the Holy Roman Emperor but refused to swear fealty to the papacy. Soviet Union Detonates "Tsar Bomba" (1961)

"Tsar Bomba" was the nickname of a hydrogen bomb detonated by the Soviet Union in 1961 that remains the most powerful nuclear weapon ever detonated. The bomb had a yield of 50 megatons, a force equivalent to 1,400 times the combined power of the two nuclear weapons dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II—or approximately 1.4 percent of the power output of the Sun. The resulting seismic shock was measurable even on its third passage around the Earth. Where was Tsar Bomba detonated? More...

Diwali (2016)

The word diwali means "a row or cluster of lights," and the week-long festivities are illuminated by lamps, fireworks, and bonfires. In northern India, it marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year. In the Punjab and Mauritius, Diwali celebrates the coronation of Rama after his conquest of Ravana. The Jains commemorate the death of their great hero, Mahavira, on this day in the city of Pava in Bihar. Diwali is as important to Hindus as Christmas is to Christians. It is celebrated by the world's 500 million Hindus with gift exchanges, fireworks, and festive (typically vegetarian) meals. More...

Python Heart Growth Could Help Humans

Pythons are able to live for nearly a year without eating, but when they do eat, their metabolisms increase more than 40-fold and their organs immediately begin to get larger to aid digestion. Their hearts, in particular, grow 40 percent or more in just three days. Researchers have been studying this phenomenon to see if it can help them find ways to stimulate healthy heart growth in humans with heart disease. So far, they have been able to stimulate heart growth in unfed pythons by injecting them with a mixture of three fatty acids found in the blood of pythons that have just eaten and in living mice by injecting them with the plasma of a fed python.
