Speakers' Corner

Often a scene of lively debate, a speakers' corner is an area designated for public speech-making. The northeast corner of London's Hyde Park may be the most famous speakers' corner, having hosted such orators as Karl Marx and George Orwell. However, speakers' corners exist—with varying degrees of freedom—around the world, including countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Trinidad and Tobago. The streets are filled with people dressed up as devils, savages, and various animals, and there are dancing and fireworks every night. On the final day, there is an afternoon procession, in which everyone accompanies the statue of St. Francis as it is carried through the streets of Quibdó. More...

3D Gun Printing Project Shut Down, For Now

For the most part, access to 3D printers is limited to the industrial sector, but technological advances are widening the scope of their use. This could have deadly consequences, as illustrated by the controversial Wiki Weapon project, which aims to develop a fully printable gun and then share its design online, allowing anyone with access to a 3D printer to manufacture his own gun. For now, the printable gun project has been put on hold, as the company supplying the printer withdrew its device upon learning how it was to be used, but the incident raises new questions about government's role in controlling technologies that can be used for illegal purposes.
