Campbell's Soup

After completing his doctorate in Germany, John T. Dorrance declined prestigious academic posts to work in his uncle's canning factory—the Joseph Campbell Preserve Company—in Camden, New Jersey. In 1897, he began replicating in condensed form the soups he had enjoyed in Europe. By 1904, his soups dominated company sales. Hope Diamond Donated to the Smithsonian Institution (1958)

The Hope diamond is one of the largest blue diamonds known. Discovered in India, the original 115-carat stone was sold to King Louis XIV in the 1660s and remained part of the French crown jewels until a theft in 1792. In 1830, London banker Thomas Hope purchased a 45.5-carat diamond, now believed to have been cut from the stolen French jewel. After changing hands many times, the Hope diamond was eventually donated to the Smithsonian by jeweler Harry Winston. Why do some think the gem is cursed? More...

Burton and Taylor were married twice, and their real-life marriage was popularly likened to the fictional marriage they portrayed in what film? More...

Devathani Ekadashi (2016)

Devathani Ekadashi is a Hindu festival, observed in rural areas, that celebrates the waking of Vishnu. Hindus believe that Vishnu's battle with the great demon Shankhasura was so exhausting that he went to sleep for a period of four months. Each year, Vishnu slumbers from the 11th day of Asadha until the 10th day of Kartika. During his long sleep, Hindu marriages and other ceremonies are not observed. Hindu women celebrate the festival by fasting, worshipping Vishnu, and singing hymns. Newly ripened crops, such as sugarcane and waternuts, may be eaten on this day for the first time. More...

Overdose-Countering Nasal Spray Could Save Lives

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that about 69,000 people a year die from heroin or other opioid overdoses. Naloxone, a drug that has been around since the 1960s, counteracts the life-threatening effects of opioid overdose, but its use has been generally limited by its need to be administered as an injection. It has, however, recently been shown to be effective as a nasal spray, meaning it could be made more widely available, particularly to those outside the medical field. According to the WHO, the drug could save more than 20,000 lives each year in the US alone if it were more widely available. More...
