Head and Shoulders Above the Crowd

In the Spanish region of Catalonia, one tradition stands above all others: the building of castells—human towers. Traditionally built during festivals, these multi-tiered structures can contain as many as 10 levels, each composed of people linked together in a circle. This dangerous activity requires teamwork and planning. First Shipboard Aircraft Takeoff (1910)

A year after learning to fly, aviator Eugene Ely performed an experiment for the US Navy: he took off from a temporary platform built over the bow of the USS Birmingham, anchored off Virginia's coast, and became the first person to take off from a ship in a fixed-wing aircraft. Two months later, he performed the first shipboard landing, using the first tailhook system to land on the USS Pennsylvania in San Francisco Bay, California. What other memorable characters did Lindgren create? More...

Lord Mayor's Show (2015)

The second Friday in November is Lord Mayor's Day in London, the day on which the city's Lord Mayor is admitted to office. The following day is the Lord Mayor's Show, a series of civic ceremonies held since 1215 that culminate in a parade to the Law Courts. Today, the Lord Mayor rides from Guildhall to the Law Courts in a scarlet and gold coach drawn by six matched horses. Accompanying the coach is an honor guard of musketeers and pikemen in period dress, as well as many bands and numerous floats decorated to reflect the interests or profession of the new Lord Mayor. Cholesterol and Diabetes Testing Recommended for Kids

A panel of experts appointed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics has issued new guidelines recommending that pediatricians screen kids for high cholesterol between the ages of 9 and 11. This may seem early, but the fact is that by the time US kids reach the fourth grade, 10 to 13 percent of them have high cholesterol. The panel also recommends that kids as young as 9 who are overweight or have other risk factors for type 2 diabetes be regularly tested for diabetes and advises doctors to talk to their 5- to 9-year-old patients about the dangers of smoking.
