Ilan Ramon

Ramon was Israel's first astronaut. As a pilot in the Israeli Air Force, he fought in the Yom Kippur War and took part in the bombing of Iraq's Osiraq nuclear reactor. He went on to serve as payload specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia and was killed when the craft disintegrated during re-entry. Hoxne Hoard Found in Britain (1992)

In 1992, a tenant farmer in the village of Hoxne, England, lost a hammer and asked a friend for help finding it with a metal detector. What objects are among its treasures? More...

Plebeian Games (2016)

The Roman leader Flaminius is thought to have instituted the Plebeian Games in 220 BCE. They originally may have been held in the Circus Flaminius, which he built. Later, they may have moved to the Circus Maximus, a huge open arena between the Palatine and Aventine hills. The Games were dedicated to Jupiter, whose feast day was November 13, and included horse and chariot races and contests that involved running, boxing, and wrestling. The first nine days of the festival (November 4-12) were devoted to theatrical performances. More...

Stinky Problem Could Soon Spread to UK

The brown marmorated stink bug, an agricultural pest native to the Far East, has already invaded North America and parts of Europe and could soon be making itself at home in the UK. It is likely only a matter of time, as two stink bugs have already been found on imported timber bound for the UK. The bugs are so named because they emit a foul smell when threatened. Worse than their smell, perhaps, is the damage they can do to fruit and vegetable crops. More...
