Sappho

The subject of many legends, Sappho was a Greek lyric poet who lived more than 2,500 years ago on the island of Lesbos, where she was the leader of a thiasos, an informal female community. Her verse is characterized by her passionate love of nature and women, the latter of which gave rise to the term lesbian, derived from the name of her island home. First Permanent ARPANET Link Is Established (1969)

Funded by the US Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), ARPANET was the first digital network that utilized packet switching, a method of data transmission. A revolutionary technology, it ultimately led to the creation of the modern Internet. The network's first permanent connection was made between computers at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Stanford Research Institute. By 1983, more than 300 computers were connected. Arbaeen Pilgrimage (2016)

In the year 680 CE, Imam al-Hussein died during the Battle of Taf in Karbala, Iraq. He was the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad and, for Shiite Muslims, one of the three holiest figures in their religion. To commemorate his passing, Shiites from around the world hold the week-long Arbaeen Pilgrimage to his gravesite 40 days after his death. This period of 40 days is the traditional Muslim mourning period following a death. Imam al-Hussein's tomb is in the town of Karbala, about 50 miles south of Baghdad. "Selfie" Oxford Dictionaries' Word of the Year

"Twerking" has been in the news quite a bit lately, but it is no "Word of the Year" according to the honchos at Oxford Dictionaries. That distinction goes to "selfie," a term for a self-portrait photograph that first gained traction on social media but has since passed into mainstream usage. Though "selfie" is not a new word—its earliest known usage dates back to a 2002 post on an online forum—its frequency of use increased an astounding 17,000 percent over the past year, earning it the title.
