Shi

Shi is the Chinese word for "poetry" or "poem." As early poetry was often sung or chanted, folk poetry was adapted from song form into written shi by the Chinese literati. Some forms of shi include gushi, an ancient style with no formal constraints aside from line length and rhyme, and jintishi, a modern form regulated by tone patterns that emerged during the T'ang period, widely considered the golden age of Chinese poetry. Blackbeard Killed in Battle with Royal Navy (1718)

Before turning to piracy, Blackbeard, whose real name was probably Edward Teach, likely worked as a privateer in the War of the Spanish Succession. While marauding in the West Indies and along the Atlantic coast, Blackbeard enjoyed the protection of North Carolina's governor—who partook of the booty. What was his role in the "Empty Chair Crisis"? More...

St. Cecilia's Day (2015)

According to her apocryphal acts, which date from the fifth century, St. Cecilia was a Roman from a noble family who was put to death for her Christian beliefs; how she became the patron saint of music and musicians is not exactly known. In 1683, a musical society was formed in London especially for the celebration of St. Cecilia's Day. It held a festival each year at which a special ode was sung. The poet John Dryden composed his "A Song for St. Cecilia's Day" in 1687 for this purpose. There are still many choirs and musical societies that bear her name today. More...

Oops! Scientists Killed Oldest Known Living Creature

Scientists hoping to gain new insights into the aging process turned their attention to the long-lived clam species Arctica islandica in 2006, dredging the coastal waters off of Iceland for specimens. Their efforts resulted in the discovery of Ming the clam, which, as they later found out, was the oldest living animal ever found. Unfortunately, in order to make this determination, the researchers had to open its shell, killing it. Once they counted the shell's growth rings, they concluded that Ming had been between 405 and 410 years old. However, a new, more detailed analysis adds another century to the earlier estimate, placing the bivalve's age at 507. More...
