Thousand-Yard Stare

The phrases "thousand-yard stare" and "two-thousand-yard stare" were first used to describe the unfocused, dazed gaze of the battle-weary soldier. Because such a look is characteristic of posttraumatic stress disorder, it is not limited to combat veterans. The thousand-yard stare can be displayed by anyone coping with the stress of trauma by dissociating from it rather than consciously acknowledging it. Zong Massacre: Slaves Thrown Overboard (1781)

Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864)

Today, it is usually associated with the Advent calendars that parents give their children to help them count the days until Christmas. In Orthodox (Eastern) Christianity, Advent begins on November 15. More...

Cute Cats Key to Language Learning?

Cat memes spread across the Internet like wildfire, but they could be more than just a fun way to pass the time. Researchers studying the Japanese concept of kawaii have linked cuteness with improved cognitive function, and at least one app developer believes this could be a powerful tool when it comes to learning a new language. The company has developed an app that aims to teach users Spanish by combining images of cute cats in humorous poses with related Spanish phrases. Time will tell if the method is effective. More...
