Steam Locomotive Flying Scotsman Sets Speed Record (1934)

The legendary no. 4472 Flying Scotsman steam locomotive was built by the London and North Eastern Railway in 1923 for use as a long-distance express train. The no. 4472 holds a number of records, including being the first locomotive to complete a nonstop run from London, England, to Edinburgh, Scotland. Barbados Independence Day (2015)

After having been a British colony since the 17th century, Barbados became independent on this day in 1966. A ceremony took place near the capital city of Bridgetown, during which the British flag was lowered and replaced by the Barbados flag, and the national anthem was sung. Today, festivities extend through the month of November with the National Independence Festival of the Creative Arts. Two Lucky Ticketholders to Split $587.5-Million Jackpot

After two months without a jackpot-winning ticket sold, the US Powerball lottery finally had two for its most recent drawing. The holders of the two tickets, which were purchased in Arizona and Missouri, will split a staggering $587.5-million jackpot. In the days leading up to Wednesday night's drawing, people in the 42 states that participate in Powerball went on a ticket-buying frenzy, purchasing an estimated 130,000 tickets per minute.
