Beta Israel

The Beta Israel, or "House of Israel," are Jews of Ethiopian origin. Long isolated from mainstream Judaism, they do not use the Talmud but adhere strictly to the Mosaic law and observe some festivals of Judaism. In 1975, the Israeli rabbinate legally recognized them as Jews, and during the Ethiopian civil war, about 10,000 were airlifted to Israel in an effort to save them from persecution. St. Andrew's Day (2016)

St. Andrew, the brother of St. Peter, was the first apostle called by Jesus, but he is primarily known today as the patron saint of Scotland. St. Andrew's association with Scotland didn't come about until four centuries after his death, when some of his relics were brought there. Scots continue the custom of wearing a "St. Andrew's cross" on November 30, which consists of blue and white ribbons shaped like the letter X. The tradition for this form of a cross began no earlier than the 13th century. More...

Ancient Burial Ground Unearthed along Silk Road

A 1,700-year-old cemetery has been uncovered in the city of Kucha in northwest China on part of the ancient trade route known as the Silk Road. The discovery was made in 2007 and only recently published in an English-language journal. Ten tombs have been excavated at the site, which dates to a time when Kucha was a powerful city-state in the region. The tombs, which were the target of grave robbers in the past, were apparently reused several times. Although the individuals buried there were most likely wealthy citizens, their identities remain a mystery. More...
