The fastest living creature on Earth, the peregrine falcon can reach speeds of up to 200 mph (320 km/h) when it dives to capture prey—typically other birds that it seizes in midair. She married fellow physicist Pierre Curie in 1895, and together they discovered the elements radium and polonium—which Marie named after her native Poland. Terlingua Chili Cookoff (2015)

The Terlingua Chili Cookoff is a contest of chili chefs held in Terlingua, Texas, an abandoned mining town near the Big Bend desert area in the southwestern part of the state. More than 200 cooks from as many as 30 states and occasionally from foreign countries show up to prepare the official state dish, and thousands of spectators drive or fly in. Earthquakes Most Devastating of Natural Disasters

When it comes to natural disasters, earthquakes take the greatest toll on health, say researchers. More than 780,000 deaths in the past decade have been attributed to earthquakes, accounting for nearly 60 percent of all disaster-related deaths. For every person killed in an earthquake, it is estimated that another three are injured. These injuries often go untreated because of quake-related damage to infrastructure.
