The Peregrine Falcon

The fastest living creature on Earth, the peregrine falcon can reach speeds of up to 200 mph (320 km/h) when it dives to capture prey—typically other birds that it seizes in midair. Small bony tubercles on its nostrils guide the high-pressure airflow away from its lungs during a dive, while transparent inner eyelids protect its eyes. What else did Camus write? More...

The coup took place on November 7 (October 25 on the Julian calendar) and, through the years, was celebrated as a national holiday marking the start of the Soviet regime. All of this ended in 1991 with the Soviet Union's disintegration. More...

Earthquakes Most Devastating of Natural Disasters

When it comes to natural disasters, earthquakes take the greatest toll on health, say researchers. More than 780,000 deaths in the past decade have been attributed to earthquakes, accounting for nearly 60 percent of all disaster-related deaths. For every person killed in an earthquake, it is estimated that another three are injured. These injuries often go untreated because of quake-related damage to infrastructure. The damage caused by earthquakes is not just physical but also mental, with as much as 72 percent of the population suffering from depression in the wake of such a disaster. More...
