The Three Hares

The Three Hares is a circular motif found at sacred sites from China to England. It consists of three hares chasing each other in a circle. Used as early as the 6th century in Chinese cave temples, the symbol appears to have spread along trade routes. It appears in architecture and on headstones and in Jewish, Islamic, Buddhist, and Christian art. It is a perceptual puzzle in that, although each rabbit has two ears, the total number of ears pictured is only three. How is this illusion achieved? More...

Marie Curie (1867)

Marie Curie was a Polish-born French physical chemist. She married fellow physicist Pierre Curie in 1895, and together they discovered the elements radium and polonium—which Marie named after her native Poland. They also distinguished alpha, beta, and gamma radiation. For their work on radioactivity—a term she coined—the Curies shared the 1903 Nobel Prize for Physics with Henri Becquerel. This made Marie the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize. In 1911, she became the first person to win what? More...

Terlingua Chili Cookoff (2015)

The Terlingua Chili Cookoff is a contest of chili chefs held in Terlingua, Texas, an abandoned mining town near the Big Bend desert area in the southwestern part of the state. More than 200 cooks from as many as 30 states and occasionally from foreign countries show up to prepare the official state dish, and thousands of spectators drive or fly in. Humorists Wick Fowler and H. Allen Smith staged the first cookoff in 1967, deciding to locate it in the hot desert because it was a contest for a hot dish. More...

Fukushima Fish Unfit for Consumption

About 40 percent of the fish caught near Fukushima's crippled Dai-ichi nuclear power plant contains levels of radiation that render it unfit for human consumption. Experts believe the contamination levels are likely the result of two factors, ongoing leakage of polluted groundwater from under Fukushima and existing contamination of offshore sediments. It is worth noting that current Japanese guidelines regarding maximum permitted concentration of radioactivity in fish and fish products are extremely stringent—100 becquerels per kilogram of wet weight—compared to international standards—1,200 becquerels per kilogram of wet weight.
