The Mirror Test

This test is used to determine whether an animal recognizes itself in a mirror—an indicator of self-awareness. It was developed in 1970 by psychologist Gordon Gallup, Jr., who was inspired by Darwin's account of an encounter with a captive orangutan that saw itself in a mirror and seemed to show recognition. Gallup refined the test by placing marks on his subjects and then observing their responses to the marks upon seeing their reflections. Which animals typically pass the test, and which fail? More...

Baldwin I Crowned First King of Jerusalem (1100)

The son of a French count, Baldwin joined the First Crusade and created the first Crusader state when in 1098 he gained control of Edessa, now in Turkey. In 1100, his brother Godfrey died in Jerusalem, and Baldwin was summoned by the nobles to succeed him as king of the Crusader state. He expanded the kingdom by conquering coastal cities and established an administration that served for 200 years as the basis for Frankish rule in Syria and Palestine. Where did Baldwin's coronation take place? More...

Crossing of the Delaware (2015)

On Christmas night in 1776, General George Washington and the Continental Army crossed the Delaware River just before the Battle of Trenton. The crossing is reenacted on December 25 each year, beginning at Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania, and ending on the opposite bank at Washington Crossing, New Jersey. The costumed actors who cross the river try to reproduce the scene exactly as it is depicted in the painting by Emanual Leutze: Green Mountain Boys sit in the bow, Gloucester fishermen man the oars, and General Washington stands with one foot on the gunwale. Test Developed to Predict Altitude Sickness Vulnerability

Most people who ascend to altitudes above 8,000 ft (2,400 m) gradually adapt to the reduced oxygen concentration and low atmospheric pressure, but some have a severe reaction that can be fatal unless they return to low altitude. Until now, there was no way of determining who would be vulnerable to altitude sickness, but researchers have developed a new test that seems to identify such individuals. At the moment, the test can only be administered after a person has spent at least four hours at high altitude, but the research team hopes to reduce this in the future. More...
