The Azusa Street Revival

Despite its brief heyday, the Azusa Street Revival is thought to have been a catalyst for the spread of Pentecostalism. The religious meeting, which was racially integrated, began in 1906 and was held in a run-down Los Angeles building that had once been used as a stable. At its height, it attracted hundreds of people to its three daily services. Accounts from members describe worshippers speaking in tongues and being healed of sicknesses. Papal Bull Bestows Authority to Prosecute Witchcraft in Germany (1484)

In 1484, Pope Innocent VIII issued the papal bull Summis desiderantes affectibusDesiring with supreme ardor. Sometimes blamed for inspiring the witch-hunts that became increasingly common in the coming centuries, the bull recognizes the existence of witches, gives Dominican Inquisitor Heinrich Kramer authority to prosecute witchcraft in Germany, and urges local ecclesiastical authorities to cooperate with inquisitors. In 1876, after dividing his force, he rashly commanded an attack against Native Americans in Little Bighorn, Montana. He and all of his more than 200 troops were killed in the battle against how many Indian warriors? More...
Quotation of the Day
When we look back, the only things we cherish are those which in some way met our original want; the desire which formed in us in early youth, undirected, and of its own accord.

Willa Cather (1873-1947)

Closing the Gates Ceremony (2015)

The celebration that takes place on this day in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, commemorates the seige of 1688, when James II stormed the Protestant city's walls. Londonderry's governor, Colonel Lundy, wanted to surrender, but his scheme was foiled by 13 boy apprentices who shut the Ferryquay Gate just as the British were about to enter the city. The celebrations held annually in December are set up by the Association of the Apprentice Boys of Derry. The festivities include a historical pageant, the climax of which is the burning of Colonel Lundy's effigy. More...

Aging May Affect Ability to Judge Trustworthiness

Swindlers stole about $2.9 billion from the elderly in the US in 2010, but seniors' apparent vulnerability to scams should not be chalked up to simple naiveté. Researchers believe that brain changes that occur as we age may impair our ability to gauge people's trustworthiness. When older adults were shown photographs of individuals whose looks were scientifically rated as untrustworthy, they were less likely than younger volunteers to pick up on visual cues that are generally considered red flags. Reduced activity in an area of the brain called the anterior insula could be a contributing factor. More...
