London's East End

Once a heavily industrial area, the storied East End of London attracted large numbers of immigrants and became known for its poverty and dense population. Vividly described by Charles Dickens, the neighborhood was haunted by Jack the Ripper in 1888, decimated by World War II bombing, and hosted the 2012 Summer Olympics. Thomas Edison Observes the Edison Effect (1880)

Known as "the Edison Effect," thermionic emission is the emission of electrons or ions by substances that are highly heated. Washington's Birthday Celebration (2016)

Every year, Alexandria, Virginia, hosts an array of activities devoted to George Washington, including the nation's largest parade honoring the father of the country. The first parade to honor him was in 1798, when he came from his Mt. Vernon home to review the troops in front of Gadsby's Tavern. The present-day festivities get off to an elegant start over the weekend with a banquet followed by the George Washington Birthnight Ball in Gadsby's Tavern, a duplication of the birthday-eve parties held in Washington's lifetime. On Monday is the big parade. More...

North Korean Nuke Test Draws Condemnation

North Korea is under fire after carrying out yet another nuclear weapons test in violation of UN Security Council resolutions prohibiting the country from developing such technology. The underground detonation is believed to have been the nuclear program's most powerful thus far, generating a seismic event with a magnitude of about 5.1. Many countries, including the US, Britain, France, Russia, Japan, South Korea, and even China—North Korea's main ally—have condemned the test, and the UN Security Council is considering further sanctions against North Korea.
