Hoodoos

Also known as fairy chimneys, hoodoos are tall, thin columns of rock that are left behind when everything else around them erodes, making them a strikingly conspicuous feature of the landscape. Sheltered from erosion by a cap of hard rock, they can be up to 10 stories tall. Because they may be composed of layers of rock that vary in density and thus erode at differing rates, they may take on a "totem pole" appearance. ENIAC, Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer, Unveiled (1946)

ENIAC was an early electronic digital computer built in the US by engineers J. Presper Eckert and John W. Mauchly. When ENIAC solved its first test problem, it made calculations for what? More...

What was Benny's real name? More...

Valentine's Day

The Church substituted saints' names for girls' names, but, by the 16th century, it was once again girls' names that ended up in the box. Eventually, the custom of sending anonymous cards or messages to those one admired became the accepted way of celebrating St. Valentine's Day. More...

Coroner Says Soda Habit Contributed to Woman's Death

The death of a 30-year-old New Zealand woman three years ago may have had a lot to do with her excessive Coca-Cola consumption. The mother of eight reportedly drank up to 10 liters of the soft drink each day, in the process consuming twice the daily recommended limit of caffeine and 11 times the recommended quantity of sugar. This, the coroner now believes, took a toll on her heart and caused her to develop cardiac arrhythmia, contributing to her death from cardiac arrest. More...
