Elephant Intelligence

Elephants are some of the most intelligent mammals on the planet and can therefore be trained to work and perform. However, their complex temperaments make training and handling them a challenge. Extensive studies place elephants in the category of great apes in terms of cognitive abilities for tool use and tool making, and their problem solving ability is considered equal to that of dolphins. Elephants are the only animals in the world known to have a ritual surrounding what event? More...

Battle of Iwo Jima Begins (1945)

The island of Iwo Jima is only 8 sq mi (21 sq km) in area, but when US forces attacked the Japanese air base there during WWII, it became the site of one of the most severe campaigns of the war. More than 21,000 Japanese troops and nearly 7,000 Americans died in the clashes. A photograph of US marines raising the American flag over Iwo Jima's Mt. Suribachi has since become one of the most famous images of the war. What was the US operation in Iwo Jima called? More...

Quotation of the Day
It is easy enough to say that poverty is no crime. No; if it were men wouldn't be ashamed of it. It is a blunder, though, and is punished as such. A poor man is despised the whole world over.

Jerome K. Jerome (1859-1927)

Anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin

On February 19, 1942, Japanese bomber and fighter planes conducted a devastating air raid on the town of Darwin, the capital city of Australia's Northern Territory. As a tribute to honor the dead and those who defended Darwin, an annual commemoration is held in Bicentennial Park by the Cenotaph, a monument to those slain in World War I. At 9:58 AM, the exact time the attack began, a World War II air raid siren sounds. During some observances, Australian regiments will reenact the attack: ground units fire their guns, and fighter planes perform fly-bys over the memorial site. More...

New Insight into Bear Hibernation

An in-depth study of hibernating bears has revealed some surprising facts about the biological changes they undergo while in this inactive state. Unlike small mammals, hibernating bears experience only a moderate reduction in body temperature, yet their metabolisms plummet much more dramatically, to just 25 percent of their normal rate. In addition, bears' hearts rates drop so low that 10 to 20 seconds can pass between beats. Understanding how bears survive with such low amounts of oxygen could help improve treatments for heart attack and stroke. More...
