The Barber of Seville's Disastrous Debut (1816)

In 1816, Italian composer Gioacchino Rossini produced The Barber of Seville, based on the comedy by French playwright Pierre Beaumarchais. Though Rossini created much of the opera's music in just weeks, it resounds with his brilliant arias, ensemble numbers, and famous crescendos. What tribute to Cobain is featured on a sign in his hometown? More...

For centuries, the Lenten season has been observed with certain periods of strict fasting, as well as giving up something—a favorite food or other worldly pleasure—for the 40 days of Lent. Celebrations such as Carnival and Mardi Gras offered Christians their last opportunities to indulge before the rigorous Lenten restrictions. More...

Who Was Charlie Chaplin?

One of the most iconic film stars of the early 20th century, Charlie Chaplin may not have been who he claimed. At the request of US authorities, who suspected Chaplin of being a communist sympathizer, British intelligence launched an investigation into the actor's background in the 1950s but came up empty-handed. Chaplin claimed to have been born in London on April 16, 1889, but newly declassified MI5 documents reveal that agents could find no record of his birth anywhere. The report concludes that Chaplin was either born outside the country or had a different name at birth. More...
