The History of Surgery

Though administering anesthesia to surgical patients only became common practice in the mid-19th century, operations have been performed since prehistoric times, when sharpened flints served as surgical instruments and trepanation—the oldest operation for which evidence exists and one involving drilling a hole in the skull—was used to treat a host of maladies. The Battle of Los Angeles (1942)

The "Battle of Los Angeles" is the name given by contemporary sources to the imaginary enemy attack and subsequent anti-aircraft artillery barrage that took place over Los Angeles, California, just months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Lack of Sleep and Warm Home Linked to Obesity

Poor diet and lack of exercise are the factors most often blamed for the global obesity epidemic, however, new data link a number of other environmental factors to the risk of obesity. A six year study of 1,300 middle-aged adults found that for every hour of sleep people typically got each day, their risk of becoming obese declined by 30 percent. In addition, people who kept their homes heated to warmer than 68° F (20° C) were twice as likely as those living in cooler homes to be obese. Researchers believe home temperature could be related to weight gain because the body burns more calories when it has to work to maintain a stable temperature. More...
