Bioluminescence

Fireflies light up due to bioluminescence: the ability of living organisms to convert chemical energy to light energy. Bioluminescence is also exhibited by some fungi, mollusks, and worms, and bioluminescent fish are common in the ocean's depths, likely because the light aids in species recognition in the darkness. Other animals use luminescence in courtship and mating, to divert predators, or to attract prey. Why is most marine bioluminescence in the blue and green part of the spectrum? More...

The Munich Air Disaster (1958)

In 1958, a British European Airways airliner carrying the Manchester United soccer team along with a number of staff members, supporters, and journalists crashed on its third attempt to take off from a slush-covered runway at Germany's Munich-Riem airport. Twenty-three of the 44 passengers on board died in the disaster. There was speculation that the club would have to fold, but the threadbare team completed the season, and a rebuilt Manchester United won the European cup in what year? More...

Eva Braun (1912)

Braun, a saleswoman in the shop of Adolf Hitler's photographer, became Hitler's mistress in the 1930s. Although she lived in homes provided by Hitler throughout their courtship—first in a house in Munich and later in his Berchtesgaden chalet—he never allowed her to be seen in public with him. What happened the next day? More...

Homstrom (2016)

Homstrom is a Swiss festival celebrating the end of winter. In many ways, it is reminiscent of the February 1 mid-winter festival observed by the ancient Celts, known as Imbolc. One tradition associated with the day is the burning of a straw man who symbolizes Old Man Winter. It is occasionally observed by Swiss-American communities in February. More...

"Python Patrols" to Wrangle Florida Snakes

Florida wildlife officials have begun training civilian "python patrols" to help in the fight against the invasive snake species that plague the state's southern half, including the Everglades. Volunteers can hunt for snakes in approved areas after completing a class in which they learn to identify and safely capture them. Florida is home to roughly 150,000 Burmese pythons, which are now considered established. Officials hope to contain a smaller population of North African rock pythons just miles from downtown Miami, but critics say the volunteer program is dangerous and will be ineffective. More...
