The Fauxhawk

In the early 1980s, the hairstyle known as the mohawk—named after the Native American tribe of the same name–became popular among young people in the punk subculture. The look is achieved by shaving both sides of the head and leaving a strip of hair on the crest of the scalp. Decades later, the fauxhawk was introduced. The Great Blizzard of '88 Begins (1888)

Railroads were shut down, and people were confined to their houses for up to a week. More than 400 people died from the storm and the ensuing cold, including 200 in New York City alone. King's Birthday (Denmark)

Though no longer observed, the birthday of Frederick IX of Denmark (1899-1972) was a national holiday in that country, marked by patriotic speeches and parades. Soldiers in uniform would march down the main street of Copenhagen, the capital, accompanied by military bands. This was also an occasion for singing Denmark's two national anthems, "Kong Kristian Stod Ved Hojen Mast" ("King Kristian Stood Beside the Lofty Mast") and "Der Er Et Yndigt Land" ("This Is a Lovely Land"). Frederick IX became king of Denmark in 1947 and ruled until his death in 1972. More...

Work Calls at Home More Distressing for Women

According to a recent study, when women receive work-related e-mails, phone calls, and texts at home, they feel higher levels of guilt and psychological distress than men. This guilt persists even if the contact does not interfere with family life. Age, marital or parental status, and socioeconomic level do not appear to affect how women feel about such intrusions. Researchers suggest that women and men have different outlooks when it comes to the boundaries between work and family life and that this may cause women to perceive their family role performance more negatively when work intrudes upon home-life.
