The Umbrella

In ancient times, small canopies were used to protect against the sun and denote rank in places like China and Egypt. In ancient Greece and, later, in Rome, the parasol came to be seen as an indispensable part of a fashionable lady's garb. The umbrella all but disappeared in Europe during the Middle Ages and did not reemerge until the late 16th century, when it was introduced as the parapluie—French for "against the rain." My Lai Massacre (1968)

During the Vietnam War, US troops searching for Viet Cong fighters massacred hundreds of civilians from the Vietnamese hamlet of My Lai. Though they had not located any insurgents in My Lai, the soldiers opened fire on the villagers, killing men, women, and children. The incident was initially covered up by army officers. When it was revealed in the press nearly two years later, it divided the US public and increased pressure to end the war. How many soldiers were convicted for their crimes? More...

St. Urho's Day

St. Urho, whose name in Finnish means "hero," is credited with banishing a plague of grasshoppers that was threatening Finland's grape arbors. His legend in the US was popularized in the 1950s; after being celebrated as a "joke holiday" for several years in the Menahga-Sebeka area, the idea spread to other states with large Finnish populations. The actual celebrations include wearing St. Urho's official colors—Nile Green and Royal Purple—drinking grape juice, and chanting St. Urho's famous words, "Grasshopper, grasshopper, go away," in Finnish. Atlantis Found, Researchers Claim

About 2,600 years ago, Plato wrote about Atlantis, describing it as an island situated in front of the Strait of Gibraltar that disappeared into the sea in a single day and night following an earthquake. The only known historical sources of information about the iconic city, Plato's "dialogues" were used by archeologists in their search for the lost city, which they believe was actually swallowed up by a tsunami. A US-led team now believes it has located Atlantis just north of Cádiz, Spain, and excavations are planned for the site. More...
