Study: How Shock Therapy Alleviates Depression

Electroconvulsive therapy, formerly known as shock therapy, has been used to treat mood disorders since the 1930s, yet scientists are only now determining how and why it works. Brain scans indicate that the controversial treatment, which uses electric currents to induce seizures in patients, dampens overactive connections between the parts of the brain that control mood and the parts responsible for thinking and concentrating.
