Proto-Sinaitic Script

Despite a century of study, researchers can agree on the decipherment of only a single phrase of Proto-Sinaitic script, a Middle Bronze Age alphabet dating to 1500 BCE. The Proto-Sinaitic script is one of two similar undeciphered scripts dated to that period and believed to be ancestral to nearly all modern alphabets. British Parliament Votes in Favor of All-Elected House of Lords (2007)

In the UK, Parliament consists, technically, of the monarch, the House of Commons, and the House of Lords. The great power of the House of Commons lies, historically, in its control of government finances. However, the powers of the House of Lords have been negligible since 1911, when an act stripped the House of Lords of its veto power on money bills and on other bills under some circumstances. The vote in 2007 for an all-elected House of Lords came after several votes on what other options? More...

Pieter Cornelis "Piet" Mondrian (1872)

Mondrian was a Dutch painter whose work foreshadowed the rise of abstract art in the 1940s and 1950s. He went to Paris in 1910 where he developed his geometric, nonobjective style, which he called neoplasticism. Along with Theo van Doesburg, Mondrian was a leader of what art movement? More...
Quotation of the Day
All of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea—whether it is to sail or to watch it—we are going back from whence we came.

John F. Kennedy (1917-1963)

Burbank Day (2018)

The birthday of naturalist and plant breeder Luther Burbank (1849-1926) is observed in California in much the same way Arbor Day is observed in other states—that is, with activities promoting the value of natural resources and the protection of trees and birds. Burbank moved from his native Massachusetts to Santa Rosa, Califotnia, in 1875 and spent the rest of his life there experimenting with new varieties of fruits, flowers, and vegetables. On March 7 a birthday and Arbor Day celebration is held at the Luther Burbank Home and Gardens. More...
