The California Gold Rush

California owes its statehood in part to the thousands of men who feverishly migrated to northern California to make "easy money" by finding nuggets of gold. Most of them, however, found barely enough gold to pay for daily expenses and had to seek work on projects like the Panama Railway. The California Gold Rush is generally considered to have ended in 1858. What American football team takes its name from the prospectors of this period? More...

Project Tiger Launched (1973)

Though trophy hunting of tigers is no longer the popular "sport" it once was, things like habitat loss, loss of prey, and poaching continue to threaten tiger populations. William Harvey (1578)

The Turkish community, which preferred an alliance with Turkey, also took up arms, complicating the struggle. Greek Cypriot National Day is celebrated in South Cyprus, which is the Greek partitioned part of the island. Almost all public services and most private shops are closed. The holiday is often celebrated with parades in city streets, along with music, dancing and flag-waving. More...

UN Court Orders Japan to Halt Antarctic Whaling

Despite signing a 1986 moratorium on whaling, Japan has continued to allow it, much to the consternation of conservation and animal rights groups as well as the international community. The country has justified its continued hunting of whales by claiming that it is being carried out for scientific purposes rather than for human consumption, a claim that has been met with widespread skepticism. On Monday, the UN's International Court of Justice ordered Japan to put a stop to its Antarctic whaling program, ruling that the scientific output of the program did not justify the number of whales being killed. Japan has said it will abide by the ruling. More...
