Arabesque

Though the arabesque motif most likely originated with the works of Hellenistic craftsmen in Asia Minor, the complex, linear style of decoration became typical of Islamic ornamentation around 1000 CE and thus became associated with Arab culture. It is characterized by symmetric, interlacing geometric patterns with flowing lines and often incorporates flower or animal motifs and Arabic calligraphy. Japanese Battleship Yamato Sunk (1945)

The largest battleship ever constructed, the Yamato was the lead ship of the Yamato class of battleships that served with the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. Quotation of the Day
One of our first amusements as children (if we have any imagination at all) is to get out of our own characters, and to try the characters of other personages as a change—to be fairies, to be queens, to be anything, in short, but what we really are.

Wilkie Collins (1824-1889)

This is a national holiday in Armenia, celebrated each year on April 7. It comes not long after another national holiday, Women's Day, which is celebrated on March 8. Women's Day is meant to honor all women, but Motherhood and Beauty Day is dedicated especially to those who have become mothers. Children and adults alike show their affection for their mothers with special visits, cards, and gifts. Sending flowers to one's mother is an especially popular way to mark this holiday. Another tradition associated with the day is the gift of a twig that has fresh sprouts on it. More...

Japanese Ghost Ship Sunk after Failed Salvage

About 5 million tons of debris were swept into the ocean by the massive tsunami that hit Japan in 2011, including the 164-foot Ryou-Un Maru, a fishing vessel that has since been drifting east without a crew. When it came within 200 miles of Sitka, Alaska, officials became concerned that it could endanger other vessels in the area. A US Coast Guard ship was deployed to scuttle the unmanned craft, but before it could be sunk, a Canadian fishing vessel claimed salvage rights to the Japanese ship. Following unsuccessful attempts by the Canadians to tow the stricken vessel to shore, the Coast Guard moved in and, using cannon fire to tear holes in the Ryou-Un Maru's hull, sank it. More...
