Kumbh Mela

Every 12 years, Hindu pilgrims gather at four sacred sites where, according to Hindu mythology, four drops of the nectar of immortality were accidentally spilled from a pot that the gods and demons were fighting over. During the festival, pilgrims ritually bathe in the river Ganges to wash away sins of their past lives and pray to escape the cycle of reincarnation. Entente Cordiale Signed by France and UK (1904)

Husserl had a major influence on what German philosopher? More...

Hana Matsuri

Hana Matsuri is a celebration of the Buddha's birthday, observed in Buddhist temples throughout Japan, where it is known as Kambutsue. The highlight of the celebration is a ritual known as kambutsue ("ceremony of 'baptizing' the Buddha"), in which a tiny bronze statue of the Buddha, standing in an open lotus flower, is anointed with sweet tea. People use a small bamboo ladle to pour the tea, made of hydrangea leaves, over the head of the statue. The custom is supposed to date from the 7th century, when perfume was used, as well as tea. Food Prices Up Again

Global food prices rose for the third month in a row in March, and the trend is expected to continue, at least for the next couple of months. Although prices remain below the February 2011 record high, there are still concerns that rising food costs could lead to hunger and social unrest in poorer countries. In 2007 and 2008, record food prices led to riots and political instability around the globe, and last year's high prices contributed to the widespread Arab Spring uprisings. More...
