Dazzlers

A dazzler is a type of a directed-energy weapon that employs intense visible light to temporarily blind its target. Compact enough for an individual to carry, dazzlers were initially developed for military use and were possibly first used in combat by the British to thwart low-level Argentinean air attacks during the 1982 Falklands War. Nelson Mandela Inaugurated as South Africa's First Black President (1994)

Mandela served as the first democratically elected President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. His political activism began after 1948 with an initial commitment to non-violent mass struggle. What were some of Astaire's most popular films? More...

Golden Spike Anniversary

This reenactment of the completion of America's transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, at Promontory Summit, Utah, has been held since 1952. Reproductions of the Central Pacific's "Jupiter" and Union Pacific's "119" meet at the site of the ceremony. Then, the Golden Spike and three other spikes are tapped into a special railroad tie; at 12:47 PM, an ordinary iron "last spike" is driven into the last tie, and the message "D-O-N-E" is sent by ham radio to the California State Railway Museum in Sacramento. Prolonged Bottle Use Linked to Childhood Obesity

Babies who are still being bottle-fed at 24 months are 1.33 times more likely to be obese at age five than children not using a bottle at that age. In a recent study, researchers found that nearly one quarter of two-year-old children who still used a bottle as their main drink container or who were put to bed with a bottle containing a calorie-filled drink were obese at age five, compared to just 16% of the children who had not been using a bottle at age two.
