Living Statues

Living statues are mimes who stand perfectly still for hours on end, pretending to be statues. They are sometimes painted with a metallic sheen or another color so that they appear to have been cast from metal or carved from stone. Often, they are so still that bystanders believe they are actual statues and—as has been shown on many a hidden-camera television show—create quite a commotion among startled onlookers if they disrupt the illusion by moving. The Battle of Legnano (1176)

In 1160, Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa was excommunicated for his support of a series of antipopes against Pope Alexander III. In the week preceding the race, the Charlotte 600 Festival offers a variety of downtown events, including a parade. More...

Virus Power

Scientists have developed an electric generator that uses viruses to convert mechanical energy into electricity. To achieve this, they first had to boost the voltage that the M13 bacteriophage virus, which they already knew had some piezoelectric potential, could generate. Once they had done this, they attached a multilayered film of the virus to an electrode and found that tapping the electrode generated enough electricity to power a small LCD screen. Someday, similar devices could be used to harness energy from the vibrations of everyday activities, such as closing doors or walking. More...
