Pole of Inaccessibility

A pole of inaccessibility is, due to its distance from geographic features that could provide access, a region’s most difficult-to-reach point. It is a geographic construct, not a physical phenomenon. The oceanic pole of inaccessibility, Point Nemo, lies in the S Pacific, 1,670 mi (2,688 km) from land. King Alexander I of Serbia Assassinated (1903)

Twelve-year-old Alexander Obrenovic became king of Serbia in 1889, when his father, King Milan I, abdicated. Proclaiming himself of age in 1893, he took over the government, abolished the relatively liberal constitution of 1889, and restored the conservative one of 1869. In 1903, after Alexander temporarily suspended the liberal constitution he had granted in 1901 so that he could replace certain government officials, he and his wife were assassinated. Who succeeded him? More...

Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett (1847)

An English suffragist and social reformer, Fawcett rejected the violent acts of some of her contemporaries in the suffrage movement, believing that the enfranchisement of women could be achieved by peaceful means. Her efforts as president of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies from 1897 to 1919 are considered to have been instrumental in earning women over 30 in the UK the right to vote in 1918. Her older sister, Elizabeth, was the first woman licensed to do what in Britain? More...
Quotation of the Day
I distrust Great Men. They produce a desert of uniformity around them and often a pool of blood too, and I always feel a little man's pleasure when they come a cropper.

E. M. Forster (1879-1970)

Chagu-Chagu Umakko (2016)

People in Morioka, a horse-breeding district of Iwate Prefecture in Japan, hold the Chagu-Chagu Umakko Festival to honor the god of horses. The parade begins at the Komagata-jinja shrine and ends at the Morioka Hachimangu shrine. Using white ropes, people lead richly decorated horses to the shrines. When they reach the shrine, prayers are said for the horses' well-being and the owners' financial success. Chagu-chagu refers to the sound of the bells that are hung on the horses' heads; Umakko comes from uma, the Japanese word for "horse." More...

Flaxseed Fails to Fight Hot Flashes

Many women are plagued with frequent hot flashes during menopause, but the hormone treatments that can relieve these symptoms have been linked to increased risk of breast cancer. Flaxseed has a weak hormonal effect, and earlier studies indicated that it could help reduce hot flashes, but a new study shows that it is in fact ineffective in this regard. A daily flaxseed bar was no more effective than a placebo—in this case a protein and fiber bar—in reducing the incidence of hot flashes in postmenopausal women. More...
