Ley Lines

Ley lines are straight lines that can be drawn between ancient landmarks and monuments around the globe. Some believe the lines emit mystical energy, especially at their intersections, and their magical properties have been featured in novels such as Thomas Pynchon's Mason & Dixon. Amateur British archaeologist Alfred Watkins is most closely associated with ley lines, but he never ascribed any supernatural qualities to them. Instead, he believed they were remnants of what? Riot at Ten-Cent Beer Night (1974)

In a disastrous effort to increase ticket sales, the Cleveland Indians decided to hold a "Ten-Cent Beer Night," allowing attendees to purchase unlimited cups of beer for just 10 cents each, during a home game against the Texas Rangers. The promotion did boost attendance, however, it also created a stadium full of drunken spectators who disrupted early innings of the game with streaking and flashing. Malaysia Birthday of SPB Yangdi-Pertuan Agong

Malaysia practices a system of government based on a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy. The head of state is the king, also known as Seri Paduka Baginda (SPB) Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Although the term "king" is used, this is not a hereditary position—the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is elected to a five-year term. Every year, the first Saturday in June is set aside as a national holiday in Malaysia to celebrate the birthday of the current and past SPB Yang di-Pertuan Agongs. More...

Sharks Worth More Alive than Dead

Humans are slaughtering tens of millions of sharks each year, largely to feed our appetite for the Chinese delicacy shark fin soup. Environmental arguments against the overfishing of sharks have failed to curb catch rates, but fishermen may be more receptive to the idea of shark conservation once they learn that it could be in their best interest financially to protect the marine predators. Researchers project that the shark tourism industry, currently valued at $314 million a year, will surge to $780 million a year within the next two decades. By contrast, the landed value of world shark fisheries is $630 million a year and has been on the decline for some time. More...
