Ramesses II was an Egyptian pharaoh, the third king of the 19th dynasty. His 67-year reign was marked by prosperity, numerous clashes with the Hittites, and increased slavery. Ramesses had vast texts written about his personal valor and had numerous temples and monuments, particularly enormous statues of himself, erected throughout Egypt. He is also widely believed to have been the pharaoh who reigned during the Jewish exodus from Egypt that is described in the Bible. What is the Ramesseum? More...

Bhumibol Adulyadej Becomes King of Thailand (1946)

A member of Thailand's Chakri dynasty, Bhumibol began his reign when his brother, King Ananda Mahidol, died in 1946 under mysterious circumstances. Although his power is largely ceremonial, he has enjoyed great popular support and serves as a focus of national unity. Who is Bhumibol's heir apparent? More...

Paul began playing country music at 14, later switched to jazz, and started his own trio in 1936. Considered one of the finest jazz guitarists, he was famous for his amazing versatility. Dissatisfied with the sound of available instruments, Paul invented a solid-body electric guitar in 1941 that was marketed by Gibson and became extremely important in the development of rock music. Several versions of his prized guitars are still manufactured. What else did he invent? More...

Uganda National Heroes Day

Uganda National Heroes Day honors all those who sacrificed themselves to better the lives of the Ugandan people. Unfortunately, the holiday is one of the most divisive days in the Ugandan year. What constitutes a hero, and who specifically should be honored, are matters of debate in the country. Many of the heroes officially recognized by the government are fallen soldiers who died during Uganda's civil war in the 1980s. Some citizens have argued for remembering less controversial heroes, such as the Ugandan doctor who detected a deadly Ebola outbreak before it spread. More...

Obesity Weighs Heavily on World

The burden of obesity has grown considerably in recent decades, with about 30 percent of the global population—a whopping 2.1 billion people—now overweight or obese. Over the past 33 years, obesity rates soared 28 percent in adults and 47 percent in children, and the number of overweight and obese people more than doubled. For now, the US retains the unenviable distinction of hosting the largest portion of the world's obese—13 percent. Though obesity was once limited to rich nations, more than two-thirds of the world's obese now live in developing countries. In the Middle East and North Africa, more than half of adult men and nearly two-thirds of adult women are overweight or obese. More...
