Maximilian Kolbe

Kolbe was a Polish priest who in 1941 was starved and killed by the Nazis in Auschwitz after volunteering to take the place of a condemned stranger. Ordained in 1918, he founded the City of Mary Immaculate religious center and was the director of Poland's chief Catholic publishing complex. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1939 and again in 1941 on charges of aiding Jews and the Polish underground. He was canonized in 1982 and declared a martyr of charity. King Abdullah I of Jordan Is Assassinated (1951)

Abdullah I was the king of Jordan from 1946 until his death. With Britain's support, he led Arab revolts against Turkish rule in WWI and, after the Ottoman Empire's collapse, became emir of the British mandate of Transjordan in 1921. When the mandate ended, he became king of the renamed Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Elijah Day

Considered to be among the greatest of prophets, Elijah is commemorated on this day in both the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches. Bed-Sharing Does Not Harm Toddlers' Development

Bed-sharing, the practice of children sleeping in the same bed as their parents, is common in many parts of the world, but the potential developmental consequences of bed-sharing during toddlerhood have not been widely studied. A recent study of 944 mothers concluded that the practice does not lead to behavioral or learning problems later in life. Still, doctors advise against bed-sharing during the first year of life because of an increased risk of suffocation and sudden infant death syndrome, and there are concerns that sharing a bed with an adult can increase the risk of death in children as old as three.
