Torcs

A torc is a large, usually rigid, collar, necklace, or armband typically made of twisted metal. Its name, which means "to twist" in Latin, is derived from this design. A sign of nobility, torcs are made of bronze, gold, and other materials and were worn by cultures of the European Iron Age, such as the Scythians, Thracians, and Celts. The "Gimli Glider": Air Canada Flight Runs Out of Fuel Mid-Flight (1983)

The "Gimli Glider" is the nickname given to Air Canada Flight 143, which ran out of fuel on a routine flight from Montreal to Edmonton in 1983. The crew was able to glide the aircraft safely to an emergency landing at a retired airstrip in Gimli, Manitoba, even through part of the runway had been converted into a racetrack and a large event was being held there at the time. Polgár is a Hungarian chess grandmaster and by far the strongest female chess player in history. A prodigy from an early age, she won many youth tournaments competing against boys. In 1991, at the age of 15, Polgár became the youngest grandmaster in history at the time, earning the distinction faster than Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov. The Three Weeks (2016)

The 17th of Tammuz (Shivah Asar b'Tammuz) marks the day on which the walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar. The three-week period between this day and the ninth of Av is known in Hebrew as the period Ben ha-Metsarim. It is a time of mourning for the Jewish people. Restrictions include not shaving or cutting one's hair, not wearing new clothes, nor eating fruit for the first time in season. Bombing in Oslo Followed by Youth Camp Shooting

Oslo, the Norwegian city known for hosting the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony each year, was rocked by a bomb blast Friday afternoon that ripped open several buildings including one containing the office of the prime minister, who was not there at the time. At least seven people were killed and 15 injured in the bomb blast. A short while later, a gunman reportedly dressed as a police officer opened fire at a nearby youth camp. Early reports say that nine or 10 were killed in that attack. The gunman was arrested and is believed to be linked to the bombing. More...
