Lazarus Taxa

The bony fish known as the coelacanth was believed to have been extinct for 80 million years—until one was caught off the southern coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean in 1938. The coelacanth is one of the most famous examples of a Lazarus taxon, a group of organisms that disappeared from the fossil record only to reappear later. Summer Jam at Watkins Glen (1973)

Summer Jam at Watkins Glen was a 1973 rock festival that drew more attendees than any pop music festival before it. Now one of the best-selling children's books of all time, it was initially rejected by publishers. How did Potter respond to this setback? More...

Lumberjack World Championships (2016)

At the turn of the century, Hayward, Wisconsin, was one of the most active logging towns in the northern United States. Nowadays Hayward is known primarily as the site of the largest lumberjack competition in the country. Lumberjacks and logrollers from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, England, and the United States come to Hayward to compete in a variety of events. The three-day event takes place in the Lumberjack Bowl, a large bay of Lake Hayward that was once used as a holding pond for the North Wisconsin Lumber Company and is now used for the World Logrolling Championships. Safest Place to Live May Surprise You

Big cities have gotten a bad rap. It turns out that, contrary to popular belief, they are in many ways safer places to live than suburban or rural communities. While it is true that US cities have more homicides than rural areas, the overall risk of dying from an accidental injury is much greater—and this risk is greatest in the nation's most rural counties. Many different factors likely play a role in this, but one thing researchers note as a possible contributor is a lack of access to trauma centers in rural areas. More...
