There is a parade held on the second Saturday in August each year, complete with marching bands, baton twirlers, floats, and units from the Navy, Air Force, and National Guard. The formalities end when the parade reaches Washington Park in the Grand Boulevard area of Chicago, where families have picnics and cookouts. More...

Experimental Hypersonic Glider Fails Test Flight

The US military project aimed at developing an aircraft that will enable the military to deliver a warhead anywhere on Earth within one hour has had its second failure in as many test flights. The Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2, an unmanned experimental aircraft designed to fly at speeds of 13,000 mph (20,900 km/h)—about 17 times the speed of sound—was launched aboard a rocket, successfully separated from it in the upper atmosphere, and began to glide back toward Earth along its planned trajectory. However, about nine minutes into its planned flight, the military lost contact with the craft and it presumably plunged into the Pacific Ocean. More...
