It was administered by the chief steward of France until the 1700s, when a ministry was organized to oversee the thousands of employees tasked with duties such as managing the king's stables, hunting for the king's meat, providing the king's food and entertainment, and attending to the king's spiritual needs. Greenwich Foot Tunnel Opens (1902)

The Greenwich Foot Tunnel is a pedestrian tunnel beneath the River Thames in East London, linking Greenwich with the Isle of Dogs. The tunnel is made of cast-iron rings lined with concrete and covered with some 200,000 white tiles. It is 1,215 ft (370 m) long and how deep underground? More...

Between 1925 and 1929, he made his classic Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings, which established the preeminence of the virtuoso jazz soloist. What style of singing did he popularize? More...

There are many different ways of calculating which days in any given year are the dog days, but it is impossible to be precise; nowadays it is generally assumed that they fall between July 3 and August 11—slightly later than they occurred in ancient times. Wrong Way Jailbreak

Most people try to break out of jail, but one Ohio woman recently decided to buck the trend and try and sneak herself in. She was caught trying to climb over a fence into the jail and refused to comply with officers' orders to stop and leave the property. Instead, she insisted they arrest her. Ultimately, the woman got her wish and was taken into custody. Officials are not sure what prompted the bizarre behavior but say alcohol may have been a factor. More...
