Bisha'a

Also known as "ordeal by fire," Bisha'a is a ritual practiced by some Bedouin tribes for the purpose of lie detection. In cases where no evidence of an alleged transgression exists, the accused is asked to lick a hot metal object, such as a spoon or ladle. His tongue is subsequently inspected by the official who presides over the ceremony. If his tongue is burnt, he is deemed to have been lying. 2008 Summer Olympics Begin in Beijing, China (2008)

At 8:08 PM on 8-8-08, the opening ceremony for the Summer Olympics began. Held in the new Beijing National Stadium—nicknamed "the Bird's Nest"—it marked China's first time hosting the Olympics. Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac (1902)

Dirac was an influential English mathematician and theoretical physicist. In 1928, he published a version of quantum mechanics taking into account the theory of relativity. Likely autistic, Dirac was known for his precise nature and literal view of the world. How did he once introduce his wife? More...

This mammoth yearly rally of 250,000 or so motorcyclists is held in Sturgis, South Dakota. Motorcycle drag racing runs eight days, and other official events include bike shows, a swap meet, monster truck races, Tough Man and Tough Woman Contests (the titles determined by fights in which biting and kicking, but not much else, is forbidden), and a fireworks show. The rally also includes unofficial events, especially weddings; 100 or more couples get married there every year. More...

Indonesians Turn to Track Therapy for Cures

To many, it goes without saying that train tracks are a dangerous place to be lying around, but in Indonesia, where the practice of so-called electric therapy has surged in popularity, officials have had to erect a sign warning of the dangers of lying on railroad tracks and threatening fines and prison time for those caught doing so. Proponents of the risky therapy say the electric current that runs through one's body when it is stretched across the rails can cure a host of diseases, but medical professionals say there is no evidence that the practice works and that it could in fact damage vital organs.
