Broken Heart Syndrome

Broken hearts are not just high school hyperbole. Some people really do experience a sudden temporary weakening of the heart muscle after emotional stress, such as the death of a loved one or a break-up. Sufferers typically have an onset of congestive heart failure or chest pain, but most people survive the initial acute event, and it has a very low rate of in-hospital mortality. Japanese doctors dubbed the condition takotsubo cardiomyopathy because sufferers' hearts resemble what? More...

US Constitution Signed in Philadelphia (1787)

The US Constitution embodies the fundamental principles upon which the American republic is conducted. It was drawn up at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia and signed in 1787, and it was ratified by the required number of states the following year. It superseded the Articles of Confederation in force since 1781 and established the system of federal government that began to function in 1789. It includes seven articles and a preamble. How many amendments have since been adopted? More...

Among the many who have appeared are Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Thelonius Monk, Gerry Mulligan, and Pee Wee Russell. Booths outside the arena sell food for every taste, from sweet-potato pies to tacos to beef teriyaki. More...

Eat Your Veggies!

Eating cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, or cabbage might slow the progression of—or even prevent—osteoarthritis. In mice, sulforaphane, a compound created in these vegetables when they are eaten, blocked a key cartilage-damaging enzyme. Researchers are now investigating whether sulforaphane will do the same for humans. For two weeks before knee surgery, 20 arthritis sufferers will eat a specially bred broccoli variety that contains high levels of glucoraphanin, the compound that becomes sulforaphane. The tissue that is removed will then be examined for signs of sulforaphane's benefits. More...
