Saint-Simon

Louis de Rouvroy, duc de Saint-Simon, was a French courtier. Although disliked by King Louis XIV, Saint-Simon established himself at the court of Versailles, where he was privy to all sorts of gossip and petty intrigues. In 1739, he began writing his memoirs. Despite his lack of literary technique or regard for grammar, Saint-Simon’s behind-the-scenes account of life at the court is considered an indispensable, albeit flawed, historical source. Sara Jane Moore Attempts to Assassinate US President Gerald Ford (1975)

In September 1975, Ford was the target of two assassination attempts. Just 17 days after Manson Family member Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme unsuccessfully attempted to shoot Ford, Moore shot at him outside a San Francisco, California, hotel. The bullet just missed the president, and Moore was then subdued by a bystander, who likely saved Ford's life. Moore was sentenced to life in prison but was paroled in 2007. What has she since said about the assassination attempt? More...

Anne of Cleves (1515)

Anne was the fourth queen consort of King Henry VIII of England. The marriage was never consummated, however, and they divorced after how long? More...

Bulgaria Independence Day (2016)

On September 22, 1908, Prince Ferdinand (1861-1948) of Bulgaria declared the country's independence from the Turkish Ottoman Empire, which had ruled since the 14th century. In 1944, the former Soviet Union invaded Bulgaria and imposed its communist system for nearly 50 years. Like many other eastern European countries, Bulgaria became an independent republic with a new constitution in 1991. In 1998, the Bulgarian Parliament reinstituted September 22 as Bulgarian Independence Day. More...

Debating the Merits of Producing Three-Parent Babies

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority is hosting a public consultation to discuss ethical and social issues surrounding a possible new fertility treatment, dubbed three-parent IVF, that would allow women with mitochondrial disease to have healthy children of their own by replacing their faulty mitochondrial DNA with healthy, donor DNA. The resulting fetus would thus carry the genetic material of three people. Discussion participants are being asked to weigh in on a number of topics, including how being a product of this technique would affect a child's sense of identity and what the status of the donor would be.
