Only five species were present in all four sampling periods: red maple (
Acer rubrum), white spruce (Picea glauca), white pine (Pinus strobus), trembling aspen (Populus tremulaides), and black cherry (Prunus serotina).
Acer Rubrum "Karpick Maple" trees were decided on as the replacements.

If there is space why not plant
Acer rubrum 'Scanlon,' the Red Maple, more upright than its parent, thus requiring less space, but colouring just as well.
It has been pointed out that while red maple (
Acer rubrum) is considered native from Canada to Florida, it has evolved many ecotypes that have specific adaptations to wet or dry sites, cold or warm climates.
They found that budA[degrees]burst shifted to earA[degrees]lier in the year in both early-budding trees such as comA[degrees]mon aspen (PopA[degrees]uA[degrees]lus tremuA[degrees]loides) and late-budding trees such as red maple (
Acer rubrum), but that the effect was greater in the late-budding trees and that over time the difA[degrees]ferA[degrees]ences in budA[degrees]ding dates narrowed.
Easily recognizable from its distinctive "helicopter" seed pods, the
Acer rubrum or Red Maple offers us a view of winged fruits.
ACER SACCHARUM, AND VARIOUS SPECIES OF ACER INCLUDING
ACER RUBRUM, ACER SACCHARUM AND ACER NIGRUM OF THE FAMILY AcERACEAE
Since the early 1900's, the understory of Quercus dominated forests has been invaded by shade-tolerant later successional species, such as
Acer rubrum (Abrams 2000), that may eventually replace Quercus dominance in the overstory (Abrams 2000, Lorimer 1985, McGee 1984, Wade et all 2000).
The Sugar Maples, Acer sacharum and saccharinum, are well worth planting, along with
Acer rubrum for fiery, intense colour.Longer lasting perhaps are the oaks, Quercus rubra and palustris, which will happily grow in our climate.
