If I hoped to serve my country there and sweep the Confederate cruisers from the
Adriatic, I am afraid my prime intent was to add to her literature and to my own credit.
Waking, on reaching the landing-place, he crossed the Lido, and enjoyed a morning's swim in the
Adriatic. There was only a poor restaurant on the island, in those days; but his appetite was now ready for anything; he ate whatever was offered to him, like a famished man.
I had an arbor arranged and a low table and an armchair put into it; and I carried out books and portfolios (I had always some business of writing in hand), and worked and waited and mused and hoped, while the golden hours elapsed and the plants drank in the light and the inscrutable old palace turned pale and then, as the day waned, began to flush in it and my papers rustled in the wandering breeze of the
Adriatic.
I shall not tarry to speak of the handsome Lago di Gardi; its stately castle that holds in its stony bosom the secrets of an age so remote that even tradition goeth not back to it; the imposing mountain scenery that ennobles the landscape thereabouts; nor yet of ancient Padua or haughty Verona; nor of their Montagues and Capulets, their famous balconies and tombs of Juliet and Romeo et al., but hurry straight to the ancient city of the sea, the widowed bride of the
Adriatic. It was a long, long ride.
Like the refugees and renegades who slunk away in the salt marshes of the
Adriatic and builded the palaces of powerful Venice on her deep-sunk piles, so these wretched hunted blacks builded power until they became masters of the mainland, controlling traffic and trade- routes, compelling the bushmen for ever after to remain in the bush and never to dare attempt the salt-water.
Newman had a great contempt for immorality, and that evening, for a good half hour, as he sat watching the star-sheen on the warm

I saw Venice and the
Adriatic; I saw her ruin in the ruin of the face before me.
It was quite a walk, by mysterious staircases and corridors, from Mrs General's apartment, --hoodwinked by a narrow side street with a low gloomy bridge in it, and dungeon-like opposite tenements, their walls besmeared with a thousand downward stains and streaks, as if every crazy aperture in them had been weeping tears of rust into the
Adriatic for centuries--to Mr Dorrit's apartment: with a whole English house- front of window, a prospect of beautiful church-domes rising into the blue sky sheer out of the water which reflected them, and a hushed murmur of the Grand Canal laving the doorways below, where his gondolas and gondoliers attended his pleasure, drowsily swinging in a little forest of piles.
This pipeline will run through Greece, Albania and the
Adriatic Sea to the south of Italy.
The air temperatures over the northern
Adriatic Sea, the northernmost part of the Mediterranean, dropped below -2.1[degrees]C, a necessary condition for seawater to freeze, with salinity between 38.0 and 38.5 PSU.
