In the body of the northern fish shines Eta Piscium, which can be found by running a line from magnitude-2.0 Alpha Arietis (Hamal) through magnitude-2.6 Beta ([beta]) Arietis (Sheratan) and extending the short line several times its length.
Yet Alpha Arietis, Hamal, shines at magnitude 2.0 and is orange.
The star's all-time record may have been set in November 1779, when astronomer William Herschel wrote that Mira "excelled Alpha Arietis so far as almost to rival Aldebaran; and continued in that state a full month." (Aldebaran, in Taurus, shines at magnitude 0.9.)
