Initial results indicate some taxa currently recognized in the southeast are conspecific with the wide-ranging species Amsonia tabernaemontana. Preliminary results also provide evidence that two morphologically similar species, Amsonia ciliata and Amsonia hubrichtii, are not closely related, and that Amsonia tabernaemontana is not monophyletic.
