Two black-and-white photocopies have been taped to the door for years: one is a copy of Caravaggio's The Taking of Christ (I'm never sure which version, the one in London or Istanbul) and the other's an Annunciation by Antonello da Messina (the really famous one, with the hands almost in benediction).
For example, Antonello da Messina's "Portrait of a Man," painted around 1745, shows a young Venetian aged about 25 with fleshy lips, clear, grey eyes and a sort of contemporary look which lies somewhere between the designer stubble and the vaguely challenging glance directed at us.
Per la ritrattistica, invece, Bellini deve molto, almeno inizialmente, oltre ai fiamminghi, ad Antonello da Messina, in modo particolare al suo Ritratto di un giovane (Gemaldegalerie, Berlino) e a quello de Il Condottiero (Musee du Louvre, Parigi) influenza riscontrabile nei belliniani Ritratto di un giovane Senatore (Museo Civico, Padova), e Ritratto di un giovane (National Gallery of Art, Washington DC).
Forse e proprio in questo concetto di scrittura come straniamento che risiede uno degli insegnamenti pio profondi che l'anziano marinaio mediterraneo ci vuole impartire, con il suo enigmatico sorriso ironico, come nel quadro di Antonello da Messina.
