I was only colouring the
Canaletto engravings that hung in my old bedroom at home; the picture was a shifting one, my mind wandering uncertainly in search of more vivid images; I could see no accident of form or shadow without conscious labour after the necessary conditions.
Canaletto is famous for painting which two European cities?
COMPTON VERNEY, WARWICKSHIRE:
Canaletto: Celebrating Britain, overview of
Canaletto's work in Britain between 1746 and 1755, The Non-Conformists: photographs from the 1970s of Hebden Bridge by Martin Parr, both until June 7.
These two paintings were commissioned directly from
Canaletto for Samuel Hill in 1730, and came into Tatton's collection in 1758.
Canaletto (Giovanni Antornio Canal) Venice: Piazza San Marco, Seen from Campo San Basso, 18th century Italian, 1679-1768 Bequest of John Ringling, 1936
A fourth painting by
Canaletto from Lord Brooke's Warwick Castle collection has had its art export licence withheld after being bought for more than pounds 219,000.
'Fine Prints from Six Centuries' is ambitious in scope and superlative in quality, including as it does engravings and woodcuts by Albrecht Durer, etchings by Rembrandt, and prints by Tiepolo,
Canaletto, and Goltzius.
As one might expect, there were first-rate works by Tiepolo,
Canaletto, and Piazzetta; there was also a small but astounding set of landscape views by Bernardo Bellotto, as well as Jacopo Amigoni's Group Portrait, 1750-52 (now in Melbourne's National Gallery of Victoria), featuring the castrato Farinelli, the most famous singer of his time.
BOOKIES reckon Ryan Moore will partner Highland Reel in preference to stablemate - and Derby fourth - Giovanni
Canaletto in the Irish version at the Curragh on Saturday.
Aidan O'Brien is now likely to be represented by Giovanni
Canaletto, Hans Holbein and Kilimanjaro in the Derby.
The great artworks are photographed to their best advantage, and the city itself is visited to remind us there just one
Canaletto.
