These waves are caused by the planet's 62 satellites, including Mimas, which creates the so-called
Cassini division between the two largest rings, A and B.
Besides the wide
Cassini Division and the thin Encke Gap at the outer edge, Saturn's ring system displays several distinct bright and dark regions in this sharp image captured on July 1st.
Since the rings are tilted wide open to our view this year, the
Cassini Division should be very evident between the outer A ring and the broader B ring.
Sunlight passing through the
Cassini Division illuminates a relatively narrow strip of the planet within the shadow cast by the rings onto the globe (SH R on G).
Between the A ring and the B ring we find the
Cassini division, an almost empty area that separates the two rings and appears as a dark lane between them.

Cassini Division, a large gap between Saturn's third and fourth main rings.
Outer ring A is separated from the bright B ring by the

With sufficient aperture and good seeing, the
Cassini Division appeared black and could be observed all around the ring system, except where it lay behind the planet or was hidden by the globe shadow on the rings.
