As retrospective data-collection techniques are open to criticism for a number of methodological reasons (e.g., respondents' ability to accurately and reliably recall information;
Cerin, 2003; Feldman Barrett, 1997; Halverson, 1988), and athletic identity is subject to lifespan fluctuations (Houle, Brewer & Kluck, 2010), it may have been an imprecise predictor for some individuals, or it may have been reinfored when it was assessed following a sport practice.
The reader's first significant exposure to the Elves is in the Prologue's final lines, the description of Celeborn's departure from Middle-earth (15-16), and the tinge of sadness to that passage persists throughout the novel, from the observation of Elves "passing westward through the [Shire's] woods in the evening, passing and not returning" (I.2.43), to the poignant beauty of

It is well established that rates of participation in sport are higher among people with higher educational attainment, income and occupational status (e.g., Farrell and Shields, 2002;
Cerin and Leslie, 2008) and that the gap in participation between those of higher and lower socio-economic status widens in adulthood, especially young adulthood (Lunn, 2010).
