The grouse even captivated Meriwether Lewis and William Clark when they encountered this "cock of the plains" at Fort Clatsop in present-day Oregon.
In describing the sage grouse, the Lewis and Clark journals state that "the cock of the plains is found on the plains of the Columbia in great abundance, from the entrance of the southeast fork of the Columbia to that of Clark's River.
